SPECTRO Application Note documents analysis of bromine in fabrics

Kleve - Germany, May 30, 2004. SPECTRO Analytical Instruments, Inc., a leading global supplier of analytical instruments and systems, has released a new Application Note that documents a simple, cost-effective method of determining the concentration of bromine in fabrics. The report summarizes the results of laboratory tests conducted using the company’s recently introduced ATLAS hand-held X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer. The analyzer employs a radioisotope as its source of X-radiation and a rugged, time-proven proportional counter as its detection system.

Analysis and control of the flame retardant bromine is an important function during many stages of textile manufacturing, treatment, and finished product sale/rental. Laboratory calibrations were performed using a series of assayed calibration standards. Data handling and results storage were accomplished via the attached PDA personal data assistant, which can be interfaced to a desktop computer for data storage. The total analysis time per sample was 30 seconds. No sample preparation was required because the aperture of the ATLAS is simply placed against the flat textile surface while the unit’s trigger is held down until the analysis is completed. Optical sensors ensure safe, quick and reliable analysis.
